Whither the Migrants? Birds as indicators of environmental change
We can now look back on as much as 54 years of Manomet landbird banding data from the standardized spring and fall migration research at Manomet Bird Observatory. In addition, passerine and shorebird studies have taken staff as far afield as Alaska and the Canadian arctic islands, the rainforest of Central America and shorebird wintering and migration stopover locations as far south as Tierra del Fuego. Some population trends are increasing, many more are decreasing. Climate change has altered some species’ distributions and/or affected migration phenology.
How do long term bird banding, data logger information, nocturnal flight calls or satellite transmitters help us distinguish the “signal” from the background “noise”?
Birds are highly sensitive indicators of environmental change, they vote with their wings! How can we all use this information to improve bird conservation?
